We are the sales team for a project in Bophut, so we have a view. This guide sticks to differences you can check for yourself, and we encourage you to spend time in both areas before you decide.
Chaweng: the busiest beach on the island
Chaweng is Koh Samui’s best-known beach, with the longest stretch of sand and the island’s largest concentration of shops, restaurants, bars and nightlife. It suits buyers who want constant activity around them and are comfortable with noise and crowds, especially in the evenings and in high season.
Bophut: quieter, built around Fisherman’s Village
Bophut sits on the island’s north coast. Its centre is Fisherman’s Village, a walkable old harbour street of restaurants and shops, and the area has a calmer, more residential feel. Many owners and long-stay residents live here through the year, not only in the tourist season. According to C9 Hotelworks (2025), around 70% of the island’s condominium stock is in Bophut, which also means there is a large local market for resale and rental.
Questions that decide it
- Do you want nightlife on your doorstep, or a quiet evening and a short trip when you want a night out?
- Will you live there, rent it out, or both? Guests who want activity and guests who want calm are different audiences.
- How far is the beach on foot? At The Astra Samui the sand at Bophut Beach is about 300 m away, and Fisherman’s Village about 850 m.
- How far are the airport, a hospital and a school? From The Astra Samui the airport is 7.3 km away, Wattanapat Hospital 1.8 km and the International School Samui 3.3 km.
